COVID-19

Between February and May 2020, during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, we sent out a survey to all European paediatric sites within the Penta ID research network. The aim of the study was to describe the implementation of SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) testing and infection control strategies, and their evolution in paediatric emergency departments in Europe.

Although infection control strategies and even discharge of patients relied heavily on receiving SARS-CoV-2 test results,

The COVID-19 pandemic is highlighting the importance of international collaboration, particularly in the field of health and science. Collaborative efforts between study leads, scientific societies and researchers has the potential to speed-up research. Through sharing resources and results we can harmonize clinical characterization studies and fill the knowledge-gap in medical research.

This is the focus of a correspondence by Malte Kohns at St George’s University London to The Lancet Infectious Disease Journal.

The Global Health Network (TGHN), in collaboration with the African Academy of Science (AAS) and the United Kingdom Collaborative on Development Research (UKCDR) undertook a survey to identify the COVID-19 global research priorities, with particular consideration to lower resource settings.

Results of the survey are presented in this report, highlighting where research focus is needed across the globe to tackle COVID-19 and future outbreaks

We are proud to announce that the European Pregnancy and Paediatric Infections Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC) was awarded a grant from the ViiV Global HIV and COVID-19 Emergency Fund to conduct research on the direct and indirect impact of COVID-19 on children and adolescents living with HIV across Europe and South Africa.

Europe has been severely affected by COVID-19, and South Africa has a high burden of paediatric HIV and has been hit hardest by the COVID-19 epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa to date.

We describe an ex-premature infant presenting with SARS-CoV-2 infection in the 5th week of life. Current reports indicate that acute symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection is relatively rare and much less severe than in adults. This case highlights that infection can be associated with life threatening pulmonary disease in young infants and that infection can follow a similar disease course to that described in adults. We provide first data on the use of the novel antiviral remdesivir in a young child and an innovative approach to expedited approval from a multidisciplinary clinical team and bioethics committee for compassionate access to the drug.
