Padua Hospital

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”description”]Penta and Padua Hospital (Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova) hold a collaborative agreement on the implementation of research projects, assistance and training in the field of HIV/AIDS and paediatric diseases, and clinical research in general.

Central to this collaboration is the socio-educational work carried out by some members of the Penta staff. Socio-educational work is an intermediate area between the hospital world of healthcare and illness, and the non-hospital domains of school, family and social life which allow HIV-infected children and adolescents to grow up together in a positive atmosphere. Moreover, it helps patients create a relationship with adults who may step in and take on a supporting role which may be lacking in their home life. Indeed, the pedagogical activity is aimed at creating a relationship of trust with minors, adolescents and families, so as to respond more and more adequately to their specific socio-educational needs. This is done through targeted individual and group interventions, both in the hospital environment and externally.

This activity is supported by the work of a psychotherapist specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathologies in children and their families, particularly concerning the area of maternity and people living with HIV.

Some of the key activities include:

  • Working with minors and their families during visits to the ‘day hospital’ following referral by the paediatrician;
  • Educational/relational support in the event of hospitalization;
  • Individual counselling and/or activation of groups with adolescents and young adults during outpatient visits;
  • Liaising with local social services for cases of greater social marginalization;
  • Home visits;
  • Residential educational summer camps (from 8-18 years);
  • Prevention and awareness-raising on the subject of HIV both in local high-schools and through multimedia platforms, with the direct involvement of young people living with HIV;
  • Peer educator training.
