Rewatch the NeoIPC CPN webinar: “The role of surveillance in preventing hospital-acquired infections among newborns”

The NeoIPC Clinical Practice Network successfully hosted a webinar on 23 November 2023, addressing the critical topic of surveillance of hospital-acquired infections in newborns. With 130 participants attending the online event, the discussion encompassed a range of crucial issues in infection prevention and control in neonatal care in both high- and low-resource settings.

Panellists included:

  • Aikaterini Mougkou, Expert in Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), who provided an overview on the importance of monitoring hospital-acquired infections in neonatal units;
  • José Ignacio Pijoan Zubizarreta, Group Coordinator of Clinical Epidemiology, Biobizkaia Research Institute, Bilbao, Spain, who shared insights into the surveillance conducted in the NICU of Hospital Universitario de Cruces in Barakaldo, Spain;
  • Christina Obiero, Researcher, KEMRI – Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kilifi, Kenya, who focused on the challenges and opportunities of surveillance in African countries;
  • Brar Piening, Senior Physician, Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, who introduced the surveillance system developed by the NeoIPC Consortium.
