The PENTA–PIDSP Scientific Program 2025, titled “Paediatric HIV, STIs, and Congenital Infections: Diagnosis, Management, and Care,” was a truly groundbreaking three-day interactive hybrid course — the first of its kind in the Philippines. Co-led by the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) and PentaTr@ining, the program was held from September 23 to 25, 2025, at the Hilton Manila and online. It brought together leading experts from the UK, Thailand, Spain, and the Philippines, along with distinguished representatives from the Department of Health in the Philippines, to strengthen paediatric infectious disease care and collaboration.
This interactive training provided invaluable updates and evidence-based approaches that can be directly applied to the diagnosis, management, and care of children and adolescents living with HIV and other infections.
Day 1 focused on Paediatric HIV Epidemiology, Prevention, and Diagnosis, emphasizing the evolving landscape of the HIV epidemic among Filipino youth. It featured discussions on national programs, human rights, and stigma reduction. What stood out most, however, were the deeply moving personal patient journeys shared during the sessions, which profoundly impacted participants and reminded everyone of the human side of HIV care. These stories transformed scientific discussions into moments of empathy and reflection, which is a powerful reminder that every case represents a child, a family, and a story of hope.
Day 2 centered on HIV Management, Treatment, and Support, where participants explored the latest in antiretroviral therapy, treatment adherence, and transition care for adolescents. One of the most remarkable aspects of the program was the case series session, during which local clinicians and international experts reviewed real cases together. The engaging discussions and collaborative problem-solving not only deepened our understanding but also reshaped how we approach HIV, STIs, and congenital infections moving forward.
On Day 3, the focus expanded to Congenital Infections and STIs, covering co-infections such as TB, hepatitis, and opportunistic infections. Through dynamic lectures and group workshops, participants enhanced their diagnostic and management skills while promoting a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to care.
As Course Director of this collaboration, I feel truly fortunate and honoured to have been part of this historic and meaningful event. It was a privilege to work with such a passionate group of local and international experts whose dedication to children’s health continues to inspire us all. Beyond the science and clinical updates, what made this experience unforgettable was the spirit of unity and shared purpose. Together, we have built not just a program, but a partnership committed to one voice, one wall, and one goal: to end HIV.”
