SMILE clinical trial: Perinatal HIV Research Unit is first African site to open for recruitment

19 Oct, 2018

A warm welcome to the PHRU based in Soweto, South Africa, as the SMILE clinical trial’s first African site.  In the few days they have been recruiting: Dr Avy Violari (Principal Investigator) and colleagues have already screened three trial participants. We wish them the best success in achieving their goal of 50 children joining SMILE from the greater Johannesburg area in the coming months.

SMILE is investigating the safety and efficacy of a once daily integrase inhibitor (with booster) against drug options used in current paediatric HIV-1 clinical care in countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Recruitment is expected to run until July 2019, with trial results expected by December 2020.  PENTA Foundation acts as Sponsor for SMILE; the trial receives drug donations from ViiV Healthcare, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and Gilead.
