ARPEC

Antibiotic Resistance and Prescribing in European Children (ARPEC, 2009-2013) was a project that involved several European universities and Health Institutions, aimed at developing and implementing a novel method of surveillance of antimicrobial prescription and resistance in children attending hospitals and primary care across Europe.

Penta was a partner in the project, supporting project coordination, evaluation and dissemination. ARPEC received co-funding from the European Union in the Framework of the Health Programme.

The overall aim of the project was to improve antimicrobial prescribing in hospitals and in the community by obtaining up-to-date, clinically relevant surveillance data on variations in clinical management and antimicrobial consumption and resistance rates and using this to create and implement educational initiatives for paediatricians in-training and in clinical practice across Europe.

ARPEC Educational Tool

The ARPEC Educational Tool was one of the specific deliverables of the ARPEC project, whose overall aim was the development of a web-based educational tool for paediatricians on the principles of prudent antibiotic prescribing containing country-specific prescribing and resistance data.

The resulting slide deck outlines the basics of rational and prudent antibiotic use for common childhood infections in ambulatory care, including introductory information on microorganisms, antibiotics, antibiotic resistance and prudent antibiotic use, as well as case studies of six common childhood infections presenting to ambulatory care providers.

This material was developed by the ARPEC Educational Tool Team, including Giangiacomo Nicolini, Julia Bielicki, Marta Romanengo, Francois Dubos and Rebecca Lundin.
