Penta Foundation is established

2004

From the original office at Padova University Hospital, a dedicated group of people started working to support Penta’s research activities, driven by the commitment to improve health outcomes for children living with HIV.

Tr@inforPedHIV is born

2005

In collaboration with ESPID and EuroCoord, the Penta Foundation launched its first innovative training programme on paediatric HIV for healthcare professionals.

Penta Foundation leads its first EU-funded project

2006

The PENTA/ECS project, funded by the 6th EU Research Framework Programme, emerged from Penta’s integration with the European Collaborative Study, one of the largest cohorts of children born to mothers with HIV. This partnership created a centralised European network for paediatric HIV research.

Tr@inforPedHIV is integrated into Oxford PGDip

2008

Tr@inforPedHIV becomes an integral part of the Oxford Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Paediatric Infectious Diseases.

Penta HIV treatment guidelines are launched

2009

Since the launch of the 1st edition of the Guidelines, Penta has been providing healthcare workers with practical recommendations on the management of HIV-1 infection in children in Europe.

Penta signs collaboration agreements with partners

2009

The first framework collaboration agreements focusing on HIV and clinical research in paediatrics are designed with partners like Medical Research Council (MRC), Padova University Hospital (AOPD), Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital (OPBG) and the French National Research Agency (ANRS).

Penta expands its scope: from HIV to paediatric infectious diseases

2010

Penta Foundation takes the lead in non HIV-related projects, such as NeoMero (sepsis and meningitis), NeoVanc (AMR in neonates) and GRiP (medicines for children), thus offering coordination of the Network’s activities. The Foundation also participates in PREPARE (epidemic prevention) and EMIF (epidemiology/informatic platform).

Enpr-EMA gives recognition to Penta

2011

Penta is recognised as a Level 1 Paediatric Clinical Trial Network in Europe to conduct clinical trials in paediatric HIV, antimicrobials and vaccinology by the European Network of Paediatric Research at the European Medicines Agency (Enpr-EMA).

Penta takes the lead in global projects

2016

Penta starts to lead EPIICAL, a global platform testing new strategies for paediatric HIV remission, and ZIKAction, a EU-funded research project to combat Zika and strengthen regional response to emerging diseases.

Penta Foundation's President receives the Bill Marshall Award

2017

Carlo Giaquinto, President of Penta Foundation, receives ESPID’s prestigious Bill Marshall Award, after giving the lecture Paediatric HIV: The European Contribution.

Equitable and inclusive research: Penta starts engaging in PPI activities

2017

Penta develops the Youth Trials Board, a model to train and support adolescents to be active partners in research trials.

conect4children (c4c) is launched

2018

The c4c pan-European clinical trial network, led by Penta Foundation and University of Liverpool, sets out to facilitate the development of new drugs and other therapies for children.

Penta starts sponsoring pTBnet meetings

2018

Penta sponsors and co-coordinates the 2nd International Meeting on Paediatric Tuberculosis (Vilnius, Lithuania), initiating an ongoing collaboration with the Paediatric Tuberculosis Network Europe (pTBnet).

Penta and WHO develop toolkit on paediatric antiretroviral drugs

2018

Penta collaborates with the WHO on the Toolkit for research and development of paediatric antiretroviral drugs and formulations. The toolkit outlines possible solutions for promoting and accelerating timely and high quality research and development of antiretroviral drug formulations suitable for infants, children, adolescents and pregnant people.

Penta contributes to first paediatric prescribing guide

2019

Penta contributes to the development and launch of Prescribing Medicines for Children, the first international textbook providing guidance on the principles behind optimal neonatal and paediatric prescribing.

Towards a more transparent organisation

2019

Penta Foundation adopts the 231 Organization Management Control Model, taking a proactive step to reinforce our commitment to a culture of legality, transparency, and ethical conduct among our staff and collaborators.

Penta leads research prioritising children and pregnant people in pandemics

2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, Penta starts conceptualising new collaborative research projects to address emerging infectious diseases.

Penta-sponsored trial ODYSSEY achieves regulatory impact

2020

Data from the ODYSSEY trial contributes to regulators approving a 5mg dispersible tablet for children. Results from ODYSSEY support current WHO Guidelines, which recommend Dolutegravir (DTG)-based treatment as the 1st choice for all children living with HIV over 4 weeks.

2020

The rebranding entails an expansion to new disease areas and courses. The launch of the fully revamped interactive online course ‘HIV & other Congenital Infections’ ensures continuation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is followed in 2022 by brand new online programmes on ‘Fungal Infections in Paediatrics’, ‘Viral Hepatitis in Children’, and the first-ever jointly hosted hybrid PentaTr@ining course in Africa (Zambia & Tanzania).

Penta launches its 5-year strategy

The 5-year strategy includes a reorganisation of the Foundation, with new areas for new competencies.

Penta ID Network turns 30!

2021

To celebrate the Penta ID Network’s 30th anniversary, Penta launches ‘Sun & Petals’, an award-winning docufilm about Penta.

 

PentaTr@ining receives award

2021

The PentaTr@ining team is awarded ESPID’s Distinguished Award for Education, in recognition of their exceptional contributions to education and training in paediatric infectious diseases.

The Network grows

2022

The Penta Scientific Strategy is developed, and the Penta ID Network is reorganised: thanks to the membership campaign, the number of members increases from 120 to over 400.

Penta contributes to the WHO AWaRe Antibiotic Book

2022

Penta provides substantial scientific contribution to the WHO AWaRe Antibiotic Book, a practical resource for doctors on the best antibiotic choices to treat children and adults with common infections. To complement the launch of the book, in 2023 PentaTr@ining holds its brand new online programme ‘AMR Online Course’.

Penta develops quality standards to engage young people in trials

The aim of the ‘Quality standards for adolescent participation in clinical research decision making’ is to support better, more inclusive and ethical engagement of adolescents living with HIV in research.

Penta develops new Research Environment

The Penta Research Environment establishes a central information and data system to support and coordinate research initiatives across the Penta ID Network.

1st edition of Penta Brighter Future Award is launched

2023

The Penta Brighter Future Award is a global initiative to celebrate the grassroots champions who work to improve health outcomes for pregnant people and children living with infectious diseases worldwide.

c4c: from project to sustainable entity

2023

The c4c project, a collaborative effort led by the Penta Foundation and the University of Liverpool, secures a lasting legacy with the creation of c4c Stichting, a Dutch non-profit organisation aiming to carry on the work done by the public-private consortium.

Penta Foundation leads the way in Italy for a more inclusive future

Penta achieves the Gender Equality management system certification, demonstrating commitment to a gender equal, diverse and inclusive work environment.

Penta Foundation changes its name!

2023

Formally known as “Fondazione Penta ONLUS”, the newly-named Fondazione Penta ETS is registered under Italy’s Third Sector Single Registry (RUNTS) for more transparency and accountability.
